Who Needs a Detox? We All Need A Detox!

“Detox, short for detoxification, is the body’s natural, ongoing process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the body.”

In college I took a Health Psychology class that forever impacted me, reinforced many health principles I already know and also opened my eyes to new topics.  Detoxifying the body was one such topic! Thanks to my notes (that I still have) I want to pass along some of the basic information I learned from my professor, Dr. Billy Lewter.  Here we go!

Most of us are not aware of the waste and junk that build up in our bodies.  As we digest food, it travels through our gastrointestinal tract and passes through our large intestines/colon and from there it will then be eliminated.  Due to the American high fat and low fiber diet, the food waste is not being eliminated quick enough.  It should be eliminated within 24 hours, but for most people it is more like 72 hours:(  This leads to the toxic buildup in our system and basically those toxins get trapped in our colon and are absorbed into the bloodstream. Not good! 

So, how do you fix this toxic buildup problem you ask?  Yep, a detox is the answer.  A detox removes the toxins from the body, improves digestion and helps eliminate waste.  There are several different detox diets out there, but coming up in the next few blogs, I’ll share some of the ones I am familiar with either because I have done it or a friend/family member has done it.  I know this topic may seem a little crazy and out there, but “you can’t knock it ’til you try it!”  Most people report that after a detox they have more energy, regular bowel movements and increased concentration/clarity. 

Food for Thought:  According to my health notes, the average American carries 10-20 pounds of fecal matter on the colon walls.  Yikes!!  Also, more laxatives are sold than any drug except aspirin.  A detox is an excellent way to cleanse your insides and clean out your colon!  Next week I will continue this detox series and go into detail on different detox diets (Lemonade Fast, Daniel Fast, Juice Fasting, etc.) Stay tuned…  

**Note: What will help you long term is to eat clean, adapt a lifestyle and diet that is high in fiber and drink more H2O!!  This is a natural way to support ongoing detoxification inside your body.
