The other day I got an email from Starbucks saying “Go ahead, treat yourself…you’ve been good this year.  Indulge in one of our new holiday Starbucks Petites-just the right size to satisfy your sweet cravings.” I just started laughing out loud thinking that I should reward myself with a Starbucks treat.  I reminded myself of two key things: #1, don’t reward yourself with food and #2, know what you’re putting in your body.  One of the best things you can do is break the connection between food and emotion.  Instead of rewarding (or punishing) yourself with food, find another way to reward yourself.  Maybe that means buying a new outfit as a celebration or buying tickets to a game as a reward, but whatever you do, don’t go crazy with food and think you deserve some rich/high calorie meal because you’re ready to celebrate!

Food for Thought: Consider checking websites to look up Nutrition Facts so you know what you’re eating when you order your food/drinks.  I often go to restaurant websites so I can check out the nutrition facts for food and drinks.  It is eye-opening to see the scary truth about how rich and unhealthy all the food is.  Just look at the nutrition facts for the Brownie Cake Pop from Starbucks (see above)….one LITTLE pop has 8 grams of fat and 170 calories.  Not to mention the 21, repeat 21 grams of sugar.  Beware of the treats and meals you’re ordering at restaurants and fast food places.  Check out websites so you are educated about what you’re putting in your body!
