Food Affects Emotion…Emotion Affects Food

Did you know that food affects your emotions and emotions affect your food?  What I mean by that is you can get caught in a vicious cycle of emotional eating just because of the foods you eat.  It all starts when we turn to food to fill some emotional void we feel.  Food can be like a drug…we turn to it to escape.  This is not a healthy way to cope with our emotions and can lead to weight gain, along with many other problems.  Do you struggle with emotional eating?  If so, you must check out this cycle below and keep reading!!

Basically the cycle starts with some triggering event or stressful situation that causes you to eat a “forbidden” food.  This leads to guilt which causes you to eat more to feel better and escape.  This can lead to temporarily or completely abandoning your efforts to eat healthy.  Now, if you are diagnosing yourself as an emotional eater because this cycle describes you and you are caught in this tangled mess–it must be stopped immediately!  Want to know how to stop this out of control train you’re on?

Yep, you guessed it!  You need to take control of your eating and stop equating food to happiness.  You MUST take the emotion out of eating!!  This means cutting out sugar as the first step and then just eating basic nutrients like lean proteins, healthy fats and complex carbs.  Once you break the sugar addiction, you will start to feel more in control of your emotions which will help you control the food you eat.

Another way to deal with emotional eating is to come up with some alternative coping strategies such as taking a walk, reading, calling a friend, taking a nap, etc.  Maybe you need to journal when you start to eat of control so you learn what foods or emotions trigger you to eat this way.  Join a support group or get a personal trainer that will hold you accountable to what you eat.  Finally, the lesson we all need to learn is:
