The 80/20 Rule for Weight Loss

February 18, 2014

If you know me or have been a client, you know I am constantly preaching 80/20!!! Yes, 80% Diet, 20% Exercise = Weight Loss. I have seen the reality of this statistic over and over again when comparing exercise and diet! As many of us have weight loss goals, our usually tendency is to think we need to work out harder/faster/more often/more intense, etc.  This is only somewhat true.  The truth is no matter how hard or how often you work out, it will never give you the results you want compared to what clean, healthy, balanced eating can do!

Think about it: there are 168 hours in a week.  We may spend 3-15 hours a week working out, but how many more hours a week are spent eating food throughout the day.  Far more time is diet related and therefore I believe has a much bigger impact on your weight loss results.  As I’ve said before, “You can’t work off a bad diet”!
You may be thinking, it is odd hearing a trainer say you need to focus more on your nutrition.  I know the reality with my clients and myself — food has far more impact on our results!  Nutrition accountability is just as important as having a trainer push you and provide workout accountability.  Nonetheless, we still can’t forget the importance of workouts.  Changing your diet to clean, healthy eating will help the fat/weight melt off.  Exercising will help change the way your body looks by building lean, toned and defined muscle.  You will get optimal results by putting the two together!
If you need help getting your food under control, MyFitnessPal is an excellent tool to help. Use it and get in the habit of tracking so you know what you’re eating. Focusing a little more on your diet may just give you the results you want–try it and see!!
