Are you FED UP?!

May 20, 2014
This past weekend I got to see the movie Fed Up and it is incredible. It will blow your mind! If you haven’t heard of it, the documentary explains and exposes how the food industry is ruining Americans health and creating the obesity epidemic. The addiction to sugar in our country is one of the biggest problems leading to the health issues, especially among children.  During the movie, they follow several families with overweight kids, all struggling to lose weight.  All the kids fill up day after day on cereal, boxed and packaged products and live on fast food school lunches.  One of the saddest parts of the movie is hearing how the kids suffer everyday and lead miserable lives because they can’t lose weight and are trapped in their 300-400 pound bodies!
After seeing the documentary, I had a couple main thoughts and takeaways:
1.Parents can’t even help their kids lose weight because they don’t know how to eat healthy.  Most of our health problems could be solved through education.  But parents don’t know, thus they can’t teach their kids how to eat healthy.  Each generation is growing up more and more dependent on fast food and store bought food products.  Reading food labels is unthinkable and cooking at home is rare these days.  If parents were educated how to eat clean and healthy, they could teach their kids by example and buy fruits, veggies, lean proteins, good fats and carbs and have everything prepared, ready to eat at home.  Yet, this doesn’t happen anymore today.  I am SO SO grateful that my mom taught me what it means to eat nutritious food, how to read food labels and the dangers of sugar! If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t know half the stuff I do about nutrition.  So there’s my point exactly–parents need to teach their kids and lead by example!

2. Think you know where sugar is hiding, well think again!  The movie also explains the amount of sugar in many of the common foods we eat. Go to your pantry right now and look at how many teaspoons of sugar are in the pasta sauce. Check out this scary comparison:

Every time I do pantry makeovers, the most common takeaway from my clients is they are SHOCKED at how MUCH sugar is in everything.  Usually the pasta sauce, boxed cereals and packaged crackers/cookies are loaded with sugar.  Go check out the milk in your refrigerator–how much is in there?  By the time you’ve eaten your breakfast of cereal and milk, you’ve had your whole days worth of added sugar (about 30g)!!  Yikes…It is hiding in almost everything we eat and we don’t even realize it!

Even if you don’t get a chance to see the movie, start paying attention to the ingredients in your food.  Sugar is just as addictive as cocaine and triggers the same response in your brain when you eat it–MORE MORE MORE!  You don’t want to be one of the statistics below.  If you need help understanding food labels and don’t know where to start, I would love to help you with a pantry and refrigerator makeover.  This is an excellent first step to making a lifestyle change–it takes a short amount of time, but will change how you eat forever!
