Oil Pulling: Looney or Legit?!

When a friend asked me a couple months ago if I had ever heard of oil pulling, I laughed out loud and asked her what she was talking about.  Clearly I had never heard of it!! A couple days later, Good Morning America featured a story all about oil pulling and this got me even more intrigued…

Needless to say, I started doing some research to find out what this crazy oil pulling thing was;) I talked to some friends who had been doing it for awhile and they filled me in on their experience and knowledge. Everything I read convinced me to try it so one morning a couple months ago I put a tablespoon of organic coconut oil in my mouth and swished it for 20 minutes (which felt like FOREVER)!  I have been doing it every morning since and have noticed some incredible benefits (whiter teeth, healthier gums, clearer skin and more).   Also, the 20 minutes will go faster each time I promise 🙂

Oil pulling is based on an ancient Ayurvedic practice that is said to boost oral and overall health by withdrawing toxins.  Several celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon and there are a few studies that have been done.  The one that got my attention said it helps those who suffer from receding gums.  That was all I needed to read to give it a try since that is something I have been dealing with for a couple years.  I am happy to report that after doing the pulling every day for a month, my periodontist confirmed that my gums have improved!  Of course oil pulling does not replace normal mouth/teeth/gum care, but it can certainly be a helpful addition.
