SUMMER Travel Tips

Are you about to leave for your next trip or family vacation? Well, it’s almost the 4th of July which means lots of trips, fun and traveling. However, this doesn’t have to mean it’s a free for all.  One of my clients said it best: “We will shop when we get to Hilton Head.  We have committed as a family to exercise, eat healthy with a few treats and not treat vacation as a free for all – I guess the results will show when we get back.”

Are you prepared for your trip?  One of the best ways to make sure you will stay on track with your fitness goals is to plan ahead.  This means planning ahead for meals and your workouts.

If you’re staying at a house or condo, hit the grocery store as soon as you get to your destination.  Load the refrigerator with healthy breakfast and lunch options and maybe even some dinners.  The more you cook at home, the better off you will be.  Still think about just having 1 free day and try to stay as healthy as possible the other days.  Don’t have 7 free days or you will regret it when you get home from vacation–and your weigh in will show it!  Check out the local restaurants and look at the menus online to find some healthier restaurant options.  Here is a great article from Fitness Magazine that recaps some traps when eating out that can derail you: http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/healthy-eating/tips/restaurant-fat-traps/?sssdmh=dm17.743607&esrc=nwfitdailytip061814

Another smart planning tip is to pack healthy snacks. The day you leave for vacation, whether you’re flying or driving, throw an apple or banana in your bag. Pack a jar of all natural almond butter or peanut butter in your suitcase. Don’t forget to pack your protein powder and a shaker so you don’t miss your shake.

Planning your workouts is another key to success.  Make sure you stay active by biking, hiking, running, paddle boarding, kayaking or any other activity!  You can often rent bikes for the week at the beach and riding bikes everywhere you go is a great way to burn some calories–not to mention a fun family activity!  Get some weight training in as well.  There are some excellent apps you can download on your phone or iPad that will also allow you to workout at your hotel, condo or house.  Check out the following apps:

Stay focused on your GOALS even when you are on vacation. Summer is one of the best times of year to get some time away, focus on achieving your goals and be active.  Now use it to your benefit and enjoy SUMMER 🙂  Next summer you will look back and be thankful you did!
