Are You a CARB Addict?

I heard someone say that if you can’t go 24 hours without something, you are considered an addict.  That struck me as I began writing this blog about carbohydrates.  Am I addicted to carbs?  Well maybe–I couldn’t go without fruit, veggies or some sort of complex carb for 24 hours.  I would say I am addicted to “good” carbs, but it is also very easy to get addicted to the “bad” carbs.  As soon as I eat something sweet, I immediately look forward to the next treat.  It’s very easy to become addicted to sugar and that’s an ongoing battle for me!  I also hear this from clients every single day.

Let me get back to some basics though.  People tell me all the time they are on a low carb diet and avoiding carbs!!! WHAT?  REALLY?  Is usually my response… Did you know carbohydrates are your main energy source is my next response. You need carbs for energy!  We shouldn’t deprive our bodies of carbs–the good carbs that is.  These give us energy and fuel us throughout the day.

So, at this point you’re probably asking, what are good carbs and bad carbs?? There is a difference that I want to make sure everyone understands:  Complex Carb (GOOD) vs. Simple Carb (BAD).  Complex carbs are things such as: Whole Grains, Oats, Wheat, Brown Rice, Quinoa, Veggies, Fruit, Sweet Potatoes, etc. Simple carbs are everything WHITE: White Sugar, White Pasta, White Flour, White anything…

Simple carbs spike your blood sugar and cause you to store fat whereas complex carbs give you fiber and help you feel full longer. The key is making sure you’re eating the right type of carbs–eliminating the bad ones and filling up on the good ones!  Check out this chart below:
