Sneak It In

This past weekend, while talking to some friends, they mentioned how challenging it is to get activity when working in an office.  If you’re like many Americans, you sit in an office all day on the phone staring at a computer….  AND you see your behind growing by the day :/  I know I sure did when I sat in an office back in my office days.  The result of sitting at a desk all day added about 20 pounds and led me to hire a personal trainer to help me lose the weight.  It’s easy to get busy and miss healthy snacks, run out for a quick (sodium and calorie filled) lunch and not drink enough water which will quickly lead to weight gain.  Sound familiar anyone?

Well, there are a few things you can do throughout the work day to sneak in some activity and burn calories. How about having a walking meeting with coworkers?  Or, what about taking conference calls while walking the parking lot or hallways?  Park farther away and take the stairs in the office.  Plan office events that will be outdoors and require activity such as a day at the White Water Center! When at home, use commercial breaks to do some cardio or ab exercises.  Keep dumbbells at the bottom of the stairs and do a few extra flights of stairs to burn more calories.  Get a Fitbit to help keep you motivated to get more steps in each day.

One of my favorite quotes is “Where there is a will, there is a way!”  Developing new active habits is the key.  Don’t let the office get the best of you–you’re the only ONE who can make the choice to beat the office weight gain.  I was there once too and know it’s possible!

  4. Move on your lunch hour
  5. Talk to your coworkers
  6. Propose walking meetings
  7. Take advantage of stationary time
  8. Skip happy hour and do something active
  9. Walk the dog
  10. Work out around the house
  11. Take advantage of technology
  12. Don’t let TV time be sedentary time
  13. Get fit with friends
