Super Bowl: Eat This, Not That!

February 2, 2016

The Super Bowl is almost here and if you live in Charlotte, you know the city is buzzing with excitement! This is Panther Nation and we are all busy preparing for parties Sunday night. So, what do you do when you’re preparing for one of the biggest parties of the year and you know there will be TONS of food and alcohol in your face?

Here’s a few of my tips plus some healthier alternatives you can take to the parties.

  • Try to focus on the people and actually watching the game (and commercials) instead of hovering over the food tables or bar
  • Bring an appetizer or healthier dish that you can eat (think veggie tray, fruit, protein)
  • Don’t go to parties on an empty stomach
  • Drink sparkling water instead of wine/beer or at least alternate the alcohol with water

jalapenosOne of my new favorite recipes are these Jalapeño poppers. They are a much better alternative to the store bought frozen poppers full of fat, calories, sodium and preservatives.  Here’s the comparison:

Homemade Poppers (1 popper):

  • Calories: 32
  • Fat: 2g
  • Carbs: 1g
  • Protein: 2.7g

TGI Fridays Cream Cheese Stuffed Jalapeños   (1 popper):

  • Calories: 73
  • Fat: 4.6g
  • Carbs: 7.3g
  • Protein: 1.3g

Pretty obvious why you should choose the homemade version–half the calories and fat, lower carbs and higher protein! 🙂

Another idea that’s healthy and packed with protein is this Peanut Butter Dip.  It’s full of protein (thanks to the Greek yogurt), lower in sugar than store bought dips and only 3 ingredients!

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup plain 2% Greek yogurt
3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, to taste
Dippers, for eating (apples, celery, carrots, crackers, etc.)

DIRECTIONS: Stir yogurt, peanut butter, and maple syrup or honey until no lumps remain. Serve with assorted dippers.

For more “Eat This, Not That” ideas, you can tune into Fox 46 News (Charlotte local channel 8) this Super Bowl Sunday morning from 8:30 to 9am!  I’ll be sharing these recipes plus a Super Bowl inspired workout! Go Panthers!!!
